BTS: How One Shoot Can Boost Your Acting Career

Captured by: Eve Gagne

Hey friend, welcome back to The Glow Up Year! I’m Meg—actress, model, and your behind-the-scenes bestie for chasing dreams, surviving plot twists, and building something big. Around here, I keep it real: the auditions, the photoshoots, the wins, and yes—even the messy in-betweens.

Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes of my first booking of the year—a Maine tourism commercial—and sharing the lessons every actor can use to book more meaningful work.

The feeling of living even one day inside your dream career? Nothing else compares. Nothing else touches it.

A Win Worth Celebrating

This shoot was my first job of the year, booked through my new agent. Not only did it feel like a fresh start, but it was also local—something rare in this industry. And it reminded me just how important it is to pause and celebrate the progress you’re making, no matter how big or small.

The Work Behind the Work

The day before, I was steaming clothes, lint-rolling dog hair, and packing everything from shoes to snacks. It might sound tedious, but that prep work meant I could show up confident and ready. When you treat every set like it matters, people notice.

The Power of People

One of the highlights was connecting with an incredible crew: stylist Taylor Heath, DP Anton Fresco, photographer Michael Wilson, and director Bobby Marnelli. Each person brought passion, professionalism, and positivity—and it completely shaped the energy of the shoot. The truth is, your talent gets you in the room, but your relationships are what keep you working.

A Gratitude Hack

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes tip I swear by: handwritten thank-you notes. At the end of the shoot, I gave cards to the key people I worked with. It took just a few minutes, but it left a lasting impression. Gratitude is one of the most underrated career strategies out there.

Key Takeaways for Actors

If you’re chasing more bookings this year, here’s what this shoot reinforced for me:

  • Celebrate every win: Stop waiting for the “big break” to celebrate. Every booking is proof that momentum is building.

  • Preparation = professionalism: Treat every set—big or small—like it matters. Your reputation for being prepared will follow you.

  • Relationships are everything: Your talent might book you, but your relationships will keep you working.

  • Gratitude makes you memorable: Thank-you cards, kind words, or even a thoughtful text—gratitude leaves a lasting impression long after you leave set.

  • Keep building your skills: Invest in learning the skills that make you easier to hire. The more you can bring to the table, the more opportunities you’ll unlock.

The Bigger Picture

By the end of two long—but incredible—days, I was reminded that this career is a team sport. You can’t do it all alone, and you don’t have to. Preparation, collaboration, and appreciation will carry you far.

So here’s my challenge for you:
Which one of these takeaways will you put into action this week?

Because your glow-up isn’t about waiting for permission. It’s about showing up, one bold move at a time.
